REV. CEPHAS CALEB BATEMAN, was educated at California College, San Francisco, A.B. 1878; Honorary degree, D.D., 1905; appointed a Post Chaplain by President HARRISON, December 6th, 1890, accepted 12th January, 1891; served in Cuba during the Spanish American War, having been assigned at his own request to 16th Infantry; embarked with said Regiment from Tampa on San Marcos, 14th June, 1898; debarked at Siboney, 24th June; engaged in hospital work until 10th July, when he joined Division Hospital at General SHAFTER'S headquarters. Rejoined 16th Infantry, after capitulation and was granted first pass given any Chaplain to enter City of Santiago. Returned to Montauk Point, Long Island, on La Grand Duchesse, and assigned hospital duty Camp Wykoff. Mentioned in books on Spanish War by General O. O. HOWARD, Capt. John BIGELOW and others. [p.48] Commended in letters by General H. S. HAWKINS and others. Ordered to Manila, Philippine Islands, 1899; returned on sick leave 1900. Assigned 28th Infantry and returned to Philippine Islands, 1901. Served in field with troops in Laguna, Cavite and Batangas provinces. On two occasions commanded troops in action, commended by letter for conduct in action also for service as Intelligence officer by Gen. S. S. SUMNER during this period. Wrote monograph on Moros of Mindanao and Jolo, now on file in Insular Burcau, War Department and engaged in further research work among the Moros. Served under General Leonard WOOD against Pang Lima Hassan during November, 1903. Returned to United States January, 1904, and was stationed at Presidio, of San Francisco, with 28th Infantry. Served seven years at General Hospital at Fort Bayard on detached service though assigned to Artillery Corps. Found worthy of "special distinction for exceptional efficiency," and promoted by selection to the grade of Major 17th January, 1908. Became the senior Chaplain of U. S. Army, 21st September, 1912. Besides his life work, as an Army Chaplain, Reverend BATEMAN has gained much notice as a lecturer and writer.

William Greene, Jr.2 was Deputy for Warwick, R. I., 1773, 1774,1775, and a member of the Committee of Safety. In August, 1776, was appointed Justice of the Superior Court and elected Chief Justice in February, 1777. He was a member of the General Assembly, and in May, 1777, was elected Speaker. He was elected Governor of Rhode Island in May, 1778, and held this office for eight years.
Joseph Nightingale3 of Providence, R. 1., was chosen by the General Assembly in 1775 to take charge of the removal of cannon and ball from Fort George. In 1775 and 1776 was Captain of the Independent Company of Cadets of Providence. In December, 1776, the General Assembly appointed him Major General of the Militia.
James Burrill4 lived in Providence, R. I. In 1776 he was Captain of the Second Company of Providence Militia, and in 1778 Captain in Col. Jabez Bowen's Regiment, and in 1781 Major of the First Regiment of Rhode Island Militia.
Ebenezer Burrill5 was delegate from Lynn to the General Court of Massachusetts, 1764-1774, and delegate to the Provincial Congress, 1774.
Dr. Jonathan Arnold6 in 1774 and 1775 was Captain of the Providence, R. I., Grenadiers, and also member of the Committee chosen to see that the agreement with the Continental Congress was strictly kept. In 1776 and 1777 was Deputy from Providence and a member, of the Committee to form a government for the state, and also examiner of surgeons for the Army and Navy. In 1774 was a member of the Committee to revise the Militia laws, and in 1780 Purveyor General to the Medical Department, and Superintendent of Hospitals for convalescents, and in 1782 and 1783 served as delegate to the Continental Congress.
Samuel McMillan7 enlisted January 1st, 1776, from Hartford County, Maryland, in Capt. Thomas Ewing's Company, Col. Smallwood's Regiment, of Maryland line. At the Battle of Long Island he was taken prisoner, and in November was taken to Halifax, where he was imprisoned until April, 1777, when he escaped. He returned to Massachusetts and re-enlisted in Capt. Lemuel Trescott's Company of Col. Henry's Regiment, August 1st, 1777, in which regiment he served until 1781. Pensioned.
John Butler8 enlisted May 29, 1777, in the Third Connecticut line and served three years as Sergeant. After his discharge was appointed Ensign in Capt. Allen's Company of Col. Samuel Canfield's Regiment and served one year, part of the time as Quartermaster.
John Gill9 of Western Pennsylvania, enlisted in May, 1777, in Capt. Isaac Seeley's Company of Col. Francis Johnson's Regiment, serving three years. He also served in Armand's Partisan Legion in 1781.
George Gorlis10 lived in Providence, R. I. He was chosen a member of the Committee of Inspection December 1774, and was a member of the Committee of Safety of Rhode Island in 1776.
Samuel Nightingale11 of Providence, R. I. Was chosen a member of the Committee of Safety and Correspondence, January 19th, 1774, and February, 1776.
